Surgery Afternoon Closure - Thursday 1st August from 12pm

The surgery will be closed the afternoon of Thursday 1st August for the upgrade to our telephone system.  If you need to speak to a GP and it cannot wait until we re-open at 8.30am on Friday 2nd August then please call 01803 396304 to speak to an out of hours GP.  This number will only be available for the afternoon of 1st August between the hours of 12pm and 6pm.  Please continue to use 111 for calls after 6pm.  The out of hours GP will have contact with the Duty GP at the surgery should you need to be seen as an emergency.  If there is a life threatening condition please call 999 and ask for the ambulance service.  This service is only for emergency situations.

GP Changes

The following changes to our regular GPs have or are going to occur this year:

  • Dr Katie Thomas: we are very pleased to welcome Dr Thomas back to Ashburton where she trained to become a GP several years ago. She has already started working here again and has appointments on Tuesday afternoons and Thursdays all day.
  • Dr Alice Beverley: we are also very pleased to welcome Dr Beverley back to Ashburton where she also trained to become a GP several years ago. She has started working here and has appointments on Tuesday mornings, Wednesday afternoons and Friday mornings.
  • Dr Nick Cartmell: we are sad to report that Dr Cartmell will be leaving the Surgery at the end of August 2019 after being a Partner here for just over 10 years. He has overseen a number of improvements to how we provide services to you and a few years ago he also set the Surgery up to offer our patients involvement in clinical research. He is moving on for family reasons. Dr Cartmell will of course make sure that all the roles he provides here (for patients and behind the scenes) are handed over seamlessly, and the remaining Partners are already making plans for how the gap he leaves will be filled.

    Telephone System

    We have recently had a significant problem with our telephone system.  We are due for an upgrade to the system in the next couple of months, but we are currently working with a limited solution to the problem we had. This means that you will not hear a phone message when you call the Surgery.  If all the incoming lines are in use, then you will hear an engaged tone.  If our Receptionists are not able to answer the telephone within a set time, then your call will be cancelled and you will need to redial.  We are aware that this isn't ideal, and we apologise for the inconvenience, but we are limited in what the system can offer.  Please bear with us as we are trying to do the best we can with a limited system.  Our telephone message providing instructions of what you should do when the Surgery is closed, is available and working on the telephone system.

Despite this, it remains very unlikely that the vast majority of our patients will be able to receive cannabis-like drugs on prescription and even then, it can only be prescribed by a specialist when relevant symptoms are exceptionally severe despite other medications. If any of our patients feel that their situation might meet these strict criteria, they should contact the Specialist managing their care in the first instance and only contact the Surgery if they don't have a current Specialist or cannot get a reply from their Specialist after 4 weeks.
